Jackery 1000 review – 1000W portable power station

This Jackery Explorer 1000 review will tell you everything you need to know about this all-in-one, alternative solution to a campervan electrical system. It combines a lithium leisure battery, an inverter and a solar charge controller in one portable unit which weighs 10kg, providing a simple solution to off-grid power when you’re on the move.

It can be charged from mains power, a car’s cigarette lighter socket, or from a Jackery Solar Saga solar panel and it features two 230V AC plug sockets, one 12V cigarette lighter socket, and multiple USB ports.

The Jackery Explorer 1000 is the largest of all the Jackery power banks, with the longest battery life, the potential to connect to multiple solar panels and the flexibility to use high-power appliances. So read on to see what we think of the Explorer 1000 in this Jackery 1000 review.

Functionality

Within the Jackery 1000 is a pure sine wave inverter which converts the battery power into 230V mains power, an MPPT solar charge controller which manages the variable power input from a solar panel, and a lithium-ion battery. The screen shows power input, output and state of charge, and its face is covered in various charging ports. The unit has a built-in handle, making it easy to move about.

Battery capacity

The Jackery 1000 has 1002Wh a lithium battery which is almost double the size of the Jackery 500. This is big enough to charge a laptop 13 times (using a 30W charger), a drone around 20 times (with a 90W charger), or a phone around 100 times. 

Because Jackery has used a lithium-ion battery, this power bank can be fully discharged, without risking damage to the battery.

Power output

The Jackery Explorer 1000 has seven different power outputs for your chargers or appliances:

230V AC

  • 2 x plug sockets (max combined draw: 1000W) 

12V DC

  • 1 x cigarette lighter socket
  • 2 x USB ports
  • 2 x USB-C ports

The 230V power is supplied from the inverter which has a continuous power rating of 1000W and a surge rating of 2000W. This means the unit can power any 230V appliance with a power draw which is below 1000W, but can also handle a higher power draw for short periods of time.

Recharging

All Jackery powerbanks can be charged in three different ways:

  • From a mains power wall plug (5-6hours)
  • From a car cigarette lighter (11-12 hours)
  • From solar panels (6-7 hours using a 200W solar panel)

The Jackery 1000 can be charged with up to 200W of solar power. You can use the portable Jackery Solar Saga solar panel, which provides 100W, or two panels can be combined to give the full 200W for faster recharge times.

Display

The Jackery powerbanks have a useful display which shows power input (such as the power coming in from your solar panel) and power output (to show how much power your appliances are using) measured in Watts. It also shows the current state of charge of the power bank.

The Jackery 1000 is a great solution for anyone who wants access to 12V and 230V power when they’re out exploring. If you’re planning a campervan conversion, this Jackery powerbank could be a really simple alternative to a campervan electrical system installation.

Paired with two Solar Saga 100W solar panels, it makes a great little off-grid setup with zero installation requirements. It would also be useful as a backup powerbank for those with a low spec electrical system.

As well as charging electronic devices, the Jackery Explorer 1000 could also power 230V appliances such as a SUP board pump, a speaker, an outdoor light, a blender or hair straighteners.

We also rate the Jackery Explorer and Solar Saga panel as a great remote-working setup, to provide extra flexibility for working from a laptop. When it’s sunny, it’s great to work outside, and the Jackery Explorer lets you work outside continuously, without having to retreat inside when laptop batteries run low. 

Although the Explorer 1000 is heavier than the Explorer 500 (10kg as opposed to 6kg), the larger inverter gives more flexibility when it comes to which appliances can be plugged in, and almost double the battery capacity means the unit will do the same job for twice as long. 

Struggling to choose the right size of powerbank? Think about the chargers or appliances you plan on using on your travels and find out how much power they draw (in Watts). Make sure the powerbank you choose can still accommodate the device which uses the most power. The Jackery Explorer 240, 500 and 1000 have inverters rated to 200W, 500W and 1000W respectively, so if you have a device which draws 800W or more, you’ll need the Jackery Explorer 1000.

If you’re looking for something smaller, lighter and less-expensive, the Jackery 500 or Jackery 240 have lots of the same functions as the Jackery 1000, but with less battery capacity and inverter power.

The Jackery 1000 can power any 230V appliance with a power draw which is below 1000W, such as a SUP board pump, a speaker, a TV, an outdoor light, a blender or hair straighteners. It can also charge devices such as laptops, cameras and phones.

The Jackery 1000 power station will last for 11 hours if it is powering something which draws 90 watts, such as a drone charger. It will last for 50 hours if it is powering something which draws 20W, such as a phone charger.

The Jackery 1000 will take 5-6 hours to fully charge when it’s plugged into a mains socket. It can also be charged from a car’s cigarette lighter socket (11-12 hours) or from portable solar panels (6-7 hours using a 200W solar panel).

The Jackery 1000 battery will last for 10 years if it is used four times per month (on average). The Jackery 1000’s battery has a cycle life of 500 cycles (one cycle is a full discharge and a full recharge). After 500 cycles, the battery’s capacity will be reduced to ∼80% of its original capacity, meaning it will still work, but won’t hold as much charge.
